William Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon himself, was an amazing poet. Centuries after his time, we still find phrases he peppered his plays with and stanzas from his sonnets still in use. The famous line from Romeo and Juliet is a case in point, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” is still frequently referenced. In essence Juliet is arguing that it does not matter that Romeo is from her family’s rival, the house of Montague, that is, that even though he is named Montague, he is still worthy of her love.
